GET WORK EXPERIENCE WITH MOXIE

Recreate NZ launched the MOXIE (Meaningful Opportunities X’ing Into Employment) initiative in 2016. MOXIE is a series of projects that provide experiential learning and meaningful work experience for youth with mild to moderate intellectual, physical, special needs or sensory disabilities.

MOXIE evolved from one small team on one orchard, to several working groups across two orchards, one garden and the Our Harvest kitchen. Through MOXIE, Our Harvest products blossomed into a delicious and reliable range. We now plan to grow the social enterprise to support more young people within the security of the Recreate NZ umbrella.

EXAMPLES OF SKILLS YOU WILL LEARN:

  • Mowing & weed eating

  • Pruning, picking and tree maintenance

  • Composting

  • Planting, seed raising, weeding

  • Kitchen hand experience

  • Customer service

  • Teamwork and communication

  • Health & Safety

  • Problem solving and taking initiative

  • Advocating for yourself

Learning is managed and monitored in a MOXIE Handbook. We ensure content is coherent, relevant and stimulating. Tracking progress and goals helps support the learning journey of each young person as well as recognising achievements. Skills can be carried over into many other areas of life.

A MOXIE STORY

Jesse is a well-known Recreate participant and he was looking for a meaningful job within a great team. He began a 10-week MOXIE placement with Mummy’s Yummys and with the support of Recreate facilitator Lisa, he learned the skills and techniques necessary to really showcase himself to his employers. Early in 2020, despite the threat of COVID-19, Jesse’s charisma and hard work secured him a permanent paid position with Mummy’s Yummys and he has been on a high ever since! Jesse continues to flourish, “he has had so much positive feedback about his great work ethic, dedication and focus, and his ability to learn” says Andrea, Jesse’s mum.
