Recreate NZ's major programmes include outdoor adventure camps, youth development getaways, urban youth events and school holiday programmes throughout New Zealand. By using the context of the outdoors and various getaway locations throughout New Zealand works twofold in developing young people with disabilities.
Firstly, it provides a rich prostectic environment for experiencial learning to develop life and social skills which are often not adopted in the classroom or home environment. This leads to greater confidence in who they are as individuals and progress towards independent living. Secondly, it allows these young people to become well traveled and experience incredible parts of New Zealand which the average New Zealander fails to appreciate.
More ProgrammesRecreate NZ offers a variety of programmes for our 'Junior' participants. These range from three-day adventure development weekend/camps, weekend Getaways to different locations around New Zealand, and of course our School Holiday programmes.
By getting our Junior participants involved in our programmes at a younger age (9 - 14) this gives them the opportunity to increase their social, emotional, intellectual and physical development (through the medium of outdoor and recreational activities) even earlier. Recreate promotes group participation in safe yet challenging activities that are provided with a high level of emotional and physical support. Many of the Recreate 'Juniors' attending camps and getaways are staying away from home for the very first time !
More ProgrammesRecreate Adventure Camps are designed to give young adults with disabilities the opportunity to increase their social, emotional, intellectual and physical development through the medium of outdoor adventure. Recreate aims to do so through group participation in safe yet challenging activities that are provided with a high level of emotional and physical support.
The camps run for four days and involve a range of activities from kayaking, abseiling and tramping to orienteering, team challenges and other learning activities. Also NEW to Christchurch participants are our Youth Holiday Programme and Weekend Getaways to locations around the South Island !
More Programmes
Not only is Recreate's focus on the young person with a disability, we also place high value on supporting the family as a whole. Therefore we like to offer programmes to the parents of the young people we work for. Currently we are offering our 'Mother's Retreat' respite weekends, two - four times per year. (as typically the Mothers are the primary caregivers)
These weekends provide an opportunity where Mothers can get together and share experiences, network, relax and be pampered for a whole weekend at beautiful Long Bay on the North Shore. As well as the friendships and support networks developed, a Mother's Retreat weekend from Recreate can provide any or all of the following: goodie bags, massages, beauticians, counselling services, yoga, art workshops, long walks on the beach, great food, dvd evenings and more.... As one Mother recently said after attending, 'I feel recharged, energized and ready to hit the ground running...'
